Jolly Archers 61st Anniversary Western Competition
The Jolly Archers 61st Anniversary Western competition was held on Sunday 30th July 2023.
Louise, Chris and Simon from Ely Archers attended. It’s always great to be greeted by the waft of bacon and sausage rolls on any Sunday morning, especially at an archery shoot.
The weather was set to be fine with gusty winds with a threat of rain in the afternoon which did arrive for the last two ends of the competition.
It was the first outside competition for Chris (barebow) and Simon (recurve) who both shot a Western 40 round (40/30). Both archers came in first place, who were up against tough competition.
Louise held on with a close match in the Western (60/50) Ladies recurve group securing a 3rd place overall.
Peacock Archers World Archery Weekend 2023
Peacock Archers held their annual world Archery weekend on Saturday and Sunday 17th and 18th June 2023 in the beautiful setting of the grounds of Girton College. Jordan, Paul, Daniel, Pete, Julian and Louise were in attendance on one or both days.
Day 1 – WA720’s and Head to Heads (17th June 2023)
Qualification round
The first part of the day is the 720 rounds with 72 arrows at 70m for recurve and longbow. 50m for compound and barebow.
Recurve and Longbow Gents – Paul ranked 7th with 592 and Julian ranked 39th with 48.
Recurve Women’s – Louise qualified 8th with 439 shooting 70m.
Barebow Gents – Daniel ranked 13th with 425.
Compound Gents – Jordan qualified 10th with 569.
Head to Head Matches
In the afternoon saw the head-to-head matches, where 3 arrows are shot with a set system for all bow types except compound who use a cumulative total score throughout 5 ends of arrows. In the set system the first archer to 6 points is the winner (2 for a win, 1 for a draw).
Recurve Gents – Paul had 2 Bye’s so went straight to the top 32 match and won it 6-0 but was beaten in the next round 6-2. Julian had a bye in the first round and then went on to lose 6-0 but it was his longbow against a recurve!
Recurve Women’s – Louise won her first match in the top 16, 7-3 then went out in the following round 6-0 to Sarah Russell who went on to win the event.
Barebow Gents – Daniel was knocked out in the first match 6-0.
Compound Gents – Jordan’s first match in the last 16 was very close finishing 134 to Jordan’s 133.
Day 2 – WA1440 and Metric rounds (18th June 2023)
The second day saw the 144 arrow rounds of 90m, 70m, 50m and 30m for gents with other shorter metric distances available for ladies, masters, and juniors. Today also included the Outdoor Cambridgeshire County Championships for 2023.
Very hot and humid on the second day, but unfortunately, we did not finish the round and had to stop once we had finished the 3rd of 4 distances due to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Wymondham Archers WA Weekend 2023
Several Ely Archers including Paul, Daniel, Julian and Jordan attended the Wymondham Archers World Archery weekend on the 10th and 11th June 2023. Some chose to attend just the Saturday and take part in the WA720 rounds with head to heads, some just the Sunday shooting WA1440 rounds and the crazy ones attended both days.
The Saturday weather was hot with gusty winds which lowered scores, whilst the Sunday was equally hot but with less wind, although enough to make differences in the scores, especially at 90m.
Paul and Jordan qualified 3rd on Saturday and Julian qualified 1st in his own category. On Sunday Daniel finished 2nd and Jordan finished 3rd in the WA1440.
Medals were handed out to those who shot well and attended both days. Julian was awarded a medal by shooting his Longbow on Saturday and Barebow on Sunday.
Wymondham Archery were great hosts with free tea and coffee all day and cooled bottled water – which was definitely required!
Archery Honeymoon
After getting married in May, Ely Archers members Simon and Jane visited Scandinavia for their honeymoon and they took part in an open archery competition at Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen on the 18th May.
After shooting two ends with less than optimal equipment they managed to walk away with ‘Goldie’ a prize bear scoring over 120 points.
Well done you two! I hope you were wearing your Ely Archers shooting shirts!
